Canada’s population is in the midst of a fundamental shift. In , almost one in seven Canadians was a senior; by , that number will jump to nearly one in four. This extraordinary change in our demographics presents new opportunities for Canadian society. It also presents challenges, which the Government of Canada is committed to meeting to ensure both the well-being of seniors and Canada’s future prosperity. Seniors play an important role in our families, communities and workplaces. They helped to build this country and continue to contribute to its success. In recognition of this contribution, the Government of Canada is committed to ensuring a high quality of life for seniors. I meet regularly with seniors from all regions of Canada and from a variety of backgrounds to make certain that I understand their views and issues. I also consult with other stakeholders, government officials and levels of government. Everything that I have learned has convinced me that a high quality of life for seniors depends a great deal on helping them to stay active, engaged and informed.

Collier Duquette, Hilary Gender, work and retirement for the baby-boomer cohort in Canada. Masters thesis, Concordia University. Historically, women have had fewer opportunities than men to contribute to the labour force mainly due to their domestic labour, which place women at a disadvantage during their retirement years compared to men. The aim of this study is to evaluate gender differences while also taking other factors into account in planning for retirement, age at retirement, returning to work after retirement, and the current socio-economic situation of retirees.
Results can be summarized along two main themes. First, they show that gender roles do intersect with the process and the decision-making process of retirement. Level of education and financial situation are intertwined with gender roles such that the socio-economic situation of retirees is largely determined by their marital status and level of education, and retired females are still at a financial disadvantage due to their more limited exposure to the labour force.
Moreover, the greater attachment to the labour force for men is apparent as they are more likely to retire later and return to work. Second, the study provides clear evidence that the process of retirement is complex, can vary according to many factors and can also follow a non-linear trend that must be better acknowledged in work about retirement issues. For example, some individuals have no plans to retire either because they cannot afford it or want to continue to work and, in other situations, retirement is not a single life event because some return to work.

In , the Canadian population was composed of many different generations, with the baby boom generation probably the most well-known. Defining a generation can be challenging, as the term can have several different meanings.
In general, a generation is a group of individuals who are about the same age and have experienced, most often as children or young adults, specific historical events, such as an economic crisis, an economic boom, a war, or significant political changes. These events may influence their views of the world. In the field of demography, however, the definition of a generation does not depend on social, economic or political factors; instead, it is based exclusively on the year s in which a group of individuals is born.
Generations can vary greatly in size depending on the number of births that occurred during a given period. The size of a generation can have a significant impact on the life course of individuals who belong to it, as well as on those who belong to other generations. Moreover, the size of a generation can affect a country’s economy and society as a whole.
Among the Canadian population in , three large generations can be identified using demographic criteria:. A baby boom, by definition, is a sudden rise in the number of births observed from year to year. It ends when a sudden drop in the number of births is observed.
